Jenkins Heritage Tour Stop

The old Jenkins family homestead is a stop on your tour. Located on Riddle Mountain, the family spent most of their time here. This homstead served as the home base for the sheep operation. Most of the buildings are still standing but a few have been lost to the passage of time.

Step back in time as Dick relates to you the flavor of what it was like to live in the late 1800's. You will have many opportunities to experience the unique life style that was Harney County. Dick uses many old family photos to add visuals to his stories.

Sheep Shearing

Shearing thousands of sheep a year was a major undertaking and back breaking work. It took many hands to make the operation run smoothly. The shearing barn was destroyed in a range fire several years ago, and all that remains are the gears and shaft that powered the 13 shearing stations. Dick has several of the old shears that were used by the shearers. Most of the wool was hauled by horse drawn wagon and then by train to market.
